Exercise 1: Warm up- Temporary drawings.

To start this drawing skills course I was asked to complete some temporary drawings. I was asked to draw with washing up liquid in the sink, to drag a stick along some sand and to pull a bicycle through a puddle.
Below are my results:

My first drawings are of green washing up liquid in my bathroom sink. I experimented with adding more, moving it around with a knife and then washing it away with water.

My next drawings were again with washing up liquid, this time yellow, I also experimented with some grains of coffee.

My next drawings were of my sons bike wheel, I rolled it in a puddle of clean water outside my apartment. These drawings are very subtle and probably would have been more effective if they were rolled in mud. However there is something quite interesting about the way the puddle water has been moved.

My next drawings were drawn in dirt with a large stick. I didn’t spend much time on these drawings however if I did I feel this could be a really effective way to draw and something I would like to experiment with further in the future.

I thoroughly enjoyed creating these drawings, there is something about the promise of my work being only temporary that made me loose my inhibitions and throughly enjoy my drawing experience. The freedom of knowing that my marks are only temporary and any errors or mistakes I make are not important is truly liberating.

I have always assumed that drawing is just about using a pencil on white paper, but this exercise excited me and allowed me to think of drawing being an art of limitless possibilities. It made me feel excited about trying out lots of different ways of drawing in the future.
